Volleyball|3 tips on how to choose a volleyball

How to choose a volleyball? There are several things you need to take into account: the touch of the ball, durability, the quality of the bounce, size, weight, and stability in the air.

When we talk about volleyball, we often talk about the ball, but it's not always obvious how to pick one for yourself. Whether you're new to the game, a seasoned player, or a pro, there's a ball out there for you. A ball can't be chosen just like that. Taking some time and a few criteria into account will help you find that rare pearl. Follow our guide to pick the best volleyball with the perfect size and weight for your practice.

1| Your level

Firstly, unlike other team sports, in volleyball, all the balls are nearly the same size. Your level will thus determine which volleyball you should use. We say nearly all the same size, but there is a difference between size 4 and size 5 volleyballs. Size 4 balls that are between 18 and 20 centimeters in diameter are used for training, while size 5 balls, the official volleyballs used for matches, measure between 20 and 22 centimeters.

2| Your age is also an important factor when choosing a ball

Even if most volleyballs are the same size, it doesn't mean to say they weigh the same. The weight is always listed on the volleyball. It's mainly to protect young volleyball players.

1. Children aged six to nine need a ball weighing between 200 and 220 grams.

2. Volleyballs for ten to fourteen-year-olds weigh between 230 and 250 grams.

3. Children aged fifthteen or over are advised to use an official ball, weighing between 260 and 280 grams.

Another key factor to take into account is inflating the ball correctly. No air, no game! Take proper care of your ball by inflating it to a pressure of between 294 and 318 millibars.

3| What material should your ball be made of?

Foam, polyurethane, synthetic leather: there are plenty of materials and complicated words to be found in this sport. We tell you everything you need to know!

Beginner: Volleyballs coated in soft foam are ideal for beginners. Why is that? When you start playing the game, you have to get used to your forearms striking the ball. It goes without saying that a ball coated in soft foam is not going to hurt your arms. You might also want to wear sleeves for added protection.

Intermediates: Synthetic leather is the ideal coating for more experienced players. Harder to the touch, these balls help you perfect your game. We can't promise you'll be smashing it on every attack, but ball trajectory will be considerably better.

Advanced: For advanced and pro players a microfibre coating is ideal. Boasting a dimpled surface, this is a ball that delivers a perfect trajectory and accuracy, worthy of your skills. Yes, our volleyballs have dimples!

And there you have it, you've got everything you need to find the right ball for you! Different materials come with a different price, you can choose the most suitable one for yourself.
