How can I be sure that my baby will stay dry when sledging in the snow?
The resistance of a fabric is measured by the height of a water column in mm that can be supported by the fabric (test based on the ISO 811 standard). The higher the pressure, the more waterproof the fabric. A component with a waterproof rating of 2,000 mm can therefore withstand the pressure exerted by a 2,000 mm water column. To make sure you stay warm and dry, we recommend using the 3-technical-layer rule:
- Layer 1 or thermal base layer to stay dry.
- Layer 2 or an insulating layer, to keep the heat in.
- Layer 3 against bad weather.
What is the water-repellent feature?
A water-repellent fabric lets water run off its surface, without absorbing it: the fabric does not soak up water and stays light and breathable. You can see drops of water beading and running off the surface of the fabric.
A fabric is made water-repellent by applying a treatment to its outer surface. This treatment needs to be renewed during the lifetime of the garment (every 3 washes).
How to restore the water-repellent properties?
To reactivate the water-repellent property, wash the garment inside out on a synthetic cycle at 30°C and rinse thoroughly. You can use your usual washing powder but no fabric softener. Then leave your baby ski suit to air-dry completely on a drying rack. Finally, turn your garment the right way round and put it in the tumble dryer on low heat for 10 minutes. The heat will reactivate the water-repellent property of the fabric.

The waterproofing of a fabric by a coating or a membrane is measured in Schmerbers or H20 mm (pressure of a water column). The higher this number, the more waterproof the fabric.
This jacket is designed with a waterproof coating (JIS 1092 standard): this component resists 5,000 mm H20 (Schmerbers) before washing (equivalent to the pressure exerted by a 5 metre column of water).
